Having fun at Honey Rock Camp

Having fun at Honey Rock Camp

It’s hard to see the stars in North Lawndale. The ambient light from Chicago’s downtown and streetlights obscures them. They are still there in the sky, but aside from the North Star, they are nearly impossible to see. To get a clearer view sometimes you have to get away.

And that’s exactly what we did in early February, enjoying a hype winter retreat at Honey Rock Camp in Three Lakes, Wisconsin. For a few wonderfully wintry days we played broom-ball, rode horses, ascended climbing walls, sledded tubing hills, threw snowballs, made s’mores, talked until late into the night, and focused on learning more about avoiding violence in our communities and families.

And we saw stars. Not only the marvelous twinkling in the sky, but also our guys, shinning as they learned and had fun. Mike made a commitment to one of our young men, James, from Chicago Westside Christian School that he would have “the best weekend of his life” or he would refund him his $30 trip fee. James didn’t want his money back.

I thank God for all our stars — especially those of you who support our efforts, either financially or through prayer.
